Cardoso Racing is proclaimed runner-up in the Spanish Superbike Championship with seven victories by rookie Borja Gómez
The Andalusian team has finished the year as the most in-form Superbike team with seven victories in the last eight ESBK races.
The Spanish Superbike Championship has come to an end at the Jerez - Ángel Nieto circuit, the home track for Cardoso Racing, where the team led by José Luis Cardoso has been proclaimed runner-up in the premier class of this event.
Borja Gómez, who last year was proclaimed Supersport champion at this same circuit, started the 2022 season in the Superbike class as a rookie with a lack of experience and has now become the most in-form rider in the class.
The rider from Murcia has been proclaimed runner-up in the Spanish Superbike Championship after his victory today, a first place that has confirmed a perfect weekend with pole, two victories, two fastest laps and the lead in free practice. With this weekend's results, Gómez has accumulated seven victories in the last eight races and has a total of 213 points in the standings.
Borja Gómez: "I have no words. It was my first year in Superbike and I don't regret doing this championship at all. I have learned a lot, the top ten are riders with names of great stature, very high level, and it has been a super nice experience to have ridden with them and learn from them. I can only thank my team, since the Barcelona round we found the point where I started to feel good with the bike and since then we have won all the races except one in which I broke the bike. Thanks to everyone who supports me, I want to dedicate the victory to my mechanic Dani Flores, who today is his birthday. Again, thank you very much to Cardoso Racing, it's my family, and now let's go for more".
José Luis Cardoso (Team Leader): "I would define this season as exceptional. Borja's arrival to Superbike has been extraordinary. It was not an unknown, because we knew his potential, but it was a learning season. We didn't think he would adapt so quickly and explode in the way he has done, we are talking about seven victories in the last eight races and that only exceptional people do that. The team and I personally feel very proud and gratified to have a driver and a person with incredible intelligence and a brutal capacity to adapt. We are delighted, there are no other words to describe Borja, all the qualifiers are few. We close the ESBK chapter with results that have been above expectations and that's the best thing that could have happened to us".
For his part, Filip Řeháček finished today's race in thirteenth position in his category, Supersport Next Generation. The Czech rider was very consistent today and, after finding some improvements on his bike, he was able to complete his best lap of the weekend today. Řeháček continues to grow and is getting fitter and fitter after months out with injury. The Cardoso Racing rider still has one more race weekend left where he can continue his growth and readaptation process, it will be in Valencia as part of the FIM JuniorGP.
Filip Řeháček: "We had a better day today than yesterday. We tried a couple of new things in the warm up and it went well. I did my best lap of the weekend in the race, but then the bike failed again and the end of the race was difficult for me. I didn't finish the way I wanted, but we improved from yesterday and we did the best lap of the weekend, so I'm happier and we have to keep the positives. I want to thank the team for all their work this weekend, we have always been working non-stop to find what we were missing, so I am very grateful for their work. Now it's time to think about the next race we have, the JuniorGP in Valencia".
José Luis Cardoso: "With Filip we close a complicated season marked by injuries, something that has not allowed him to evolve as we would have liked. Even so, we have continued to work together and we have to keep moving forward. In general I would also like to thank all the sponsors, especially Michelin, for the dedication and professionalism of Carlos, who has been a key person for our project. Also many thanks to Yamaha for making everything so much easier. I also have to thank all the people who make up the team, this family, all of them are the ones who make possible the good atmosphere here".
